EUROSCICOMM 2024: Internation COALESCE conference on the publics of science communication.
EUROSCICOMM 2024 is a crucial gathering for national and international experts in science communication and is urgently needed to tackle the challenges in the field. The goal is to dissect the current state of science communication and identify the most effective strategies for engaging audiences traditionally distant from science. By bringing together experts from diverse science communication fields, the conference serves as a platform for collective reflection on the critical hurdles in public science communication.
The sessions are organized within the framework of the European project COALESCE (HORIZON-WIDERA-2022-ERA-01-60), whose objective is to establish the European Competence Center for Science Communication.

One of the strategic axes of this project is co-creating activities with different audiences, ensuring that the developed proposals meet the demands and needs of the end users. As part of the COALESCE project, the University of Valencia is responsible for designing resources aimed at the public to identify misleading messages and the general lack of trust in information, particularly concerning political decision-making.
Science and scientists generally enjoy a good reputation among the Spanish population, as indicated by the Social Perception of Science Surveys conducted by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) since 2002. However, the primary challenge lies in reaching vulnerable audiences, who find it harder to be informed about science and to engage in activities or encourage scientific careers, especially among adolescents. All of this is in the current social context, where scientific knowledge has been questioned by populist leaders with severe consequences for public health.
