Agenda UV

The Foto-síntesi (Photosynthesis) exhibition holds the works of students of the subject Painting and Photography of the Faculty of Fine Arts (UPV), conducted by Pilar Beltrán and José Luis Cueto. The exhibition regards a practical case set out in class in which the students were challenged to consider and describe concepts such as collective memory, the city, the classification, the archive, etc. For this task, they selected the Botanic, as it linked these concepts and allowed them to carry out a researching phase in the garden complemented by an individual search of information as a precursor to define their proposals.

At Foto-síntesi, we will find a wide variety of approximations to the challenge posed. These works are born under the embodiment of vegetal elements through cyanotype, a technic explored by the botanist Anna Atkins in the 19th century in the first publication in which the photography was used as a means of scientific documentation. There are also proposals that use flowers and leaves as a part of the work, reflections on the relation between city and nature and on the value of native flora. Of course, some of the works have portrayed the Garden as a space of memory, personal – associated to childhood memories, for instance – and collective, with all the movements defending the Garden and the complex reality of the adjoining city.
