The use of smartphones is present in everyday life far beyond the function of making calls. We use more and more applications, Apps, that allow us to do tasks that were unthinkable until recently. Many of these applications are based on the precise and appropriate use of different sensors integrated into the structure of our smartphone. There is, therefore, a high degree of technology that makes mobile phones a good tool for scientific demonstrations.

In this lecture, Juan A. Monsoriu proposes some simple and fascinating experiments in physics with the most common sensors found in our smartphones. Through these, we can see how our phone counts the steps or what makes it possible to convert it into a compass or a macro camera, among many other things.

Smart Physics is an initiative promoted by Juan A. Monsoriu dedicated to the dissemination of the use of sensors in the area of Physics and Technology, both in secondary and university education. To this end, elements such as the latest generation of mobile phones are introduced in the laboratory work and new perspectives are generated in the Educational Sciences. Through this education in ICT, it aims to contribute to avoiding the digital divide and to developing a modern and balanced society.

Juan A. Monsoriu holds a degree in Physics from the Universitat de València, with an Extraordinary Degree Award, and a Doctorate in Physics with an Excellent Cum Laude Award and an Extraordinary Doctorate Award. He is currently Professor of Applied Physics at the UPV, co-director of the Valencia Diffractive Optics Group and head of Smart Physics. His teaching work has been recognized with the Teaching Excellence Award from the Social Council of the UPV and the Generalitat Valenciana in 2010 and with the First Prize in 2013 of the'Science in Action' Programme of the Real Sociedad Española de Física to the Archimedes Physics Working Group of which he has been a member. He is co-author of more than 100 articles published in prestigious international journals in different fields of physics and engineering, as well as numerous contributions in the field of teaching and dissemination.
