El enigma Agustina
Projection+colloquium: 'El enigma Agustina'

Documentary on the silver age of Spanish science and subsequent colloquium with the popularizers Manuel González García and Natalia Ruiz Zelmanovitch

At the beginning of the 20th century, Spain was able to become the vanguard of science in Europe, where one of the most important moments for disciplines such as physics or chemistry was experienced. The most brilliant minds of the day, from Albert Einstein, Marie Curie or Edwin Schroedinger to Niels Bohr, made key contributions to laying the foundations of current scientific research. In Spain, however, the war and the subsequent dictatorship caused many projects and investigations to be forgotten in the drawers.

The Enigma Agustina, which we premiered in Valencia in Las Charlas del Grel at the Botànic, is a documentary that aims to shed light on the scientific research of that important moment in the history of Spain. Personalities such as Blas Cabrera, Pepín Bello, Maria de Maeztu or Felisa Martín Bravo brought us closer to the so-called Silver Age of Spanish science. At the same time, the documentary also seeks to convey complex scientific messages to a wide audience, addressing some of the most relevant scientific milestones of the period, such as general relativity, quantum mechanics and cosmology.

The documentary is directed by the Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía (IAA-CSIC) and financed by the Fundación Española para la Ciencia y la Tecnología (FECYT) in collaboration with the Sociedad Española de Astronomía, the Consejería de Cultura de la Junta de Andalucía and the Instituto Andaluz de la Mujer.

After the screening of El enigma Agustina, a colloquium will be held with Manuel González García and Natalia Ruiz Zelmanovitch, members of the team behind this informative project, with which we will close the season of Las Charlas del Grel at Botànico, while waiting for new activities next year.
