Tartuffe, or The Impostor is a comedy in five acts written in alexandrine verse by Molière and released the 12 May, 1664. Orgon is an important character who has fallen under the influence of Tartuffe, a sanctimonious hypocrite, who also is quite clumsy. In fact, the only ones who have not realized about the true nature of Tartuffe are Orgon and Madame Pernelle. The mediocre Tartuffe exaggerates devotion and has become the spiritual director of Orgon. This adventurer is trying not only to marry the daughter of his benefactor but to seduce the second wife of this one, Elmira, much younger than her husband.
