Within the R&D Conference series in the Department of Computer Science, we present the first conference to be held on March 3 in classroom 2.1 in the hours of 15:00 to 16:00. It will be presented by Prof. Dr. Rafael Sebastian, member of the research group Computational Multiscale Simulation Lab (CoMMLab).

The information about this conference is as follows:

- TITLE: Computational Modeling of Cardiac Electrophysiology. Application to diagnosis and treatment of arrhythmias.

- ABSTRACT:  Cardiac arrhythmias are one of the leading causes of mortality in Europe and impose a huge healthcare burden on society. Despite well-developed clinical guidelines for management of atrial fibrillation (AF) or ventricular tachycardia (VT), long-term treatment success rates remain unacceptably low due to complexity of the disease. Computational models of the electrical behavior of the heart have proved to be a useful tool for better understanding the biophysical principles of cardiac electrophysiology, and thus are beginning to be used to improve cardiac arrhythmia treatment. The primary aim of the research group CoMMLab is to develop and translate technologies bases on the Virtual Physiological Human into the clinical environment. In particular, we are building 3D models of the atria and ventricles from CT (Computerised Tomography) and MR (Magnetic Resonance) Imaging of real patients. Those models are used to perform multiscale simulations (from cell to organ scale) that are able to reproduce the electrical behaviour of the heart, both in healthy and pathological conditions. From that simulations biomarkers are obtained to improve characterisation and diagnosis of different pathologies with the aim of predicting and optimising complex cardiac therapies.

We will continue to report more conferences.
