Analysis of Microstructure of the Cardiac Conduction System Based on Three-Dimensional Confocal Microscopy
Researchers from the CoMMLab group, collaborating with Professor Frank Sachse of the University of Utah, have been able to analyse and characterise the microstructure of the cardiac conduction system. In order to do this, a thesis student directed by Dr. Rafael Sebastian went to the facilities in Utah and developed a methodology for obtaining high resolution 3D information using a confocal microscope.
These data were analysed in 3D and characterised to obtain new information useful for the construction of cardiac models of the heart, which allow the realistic simulation of its functioning. In the future these models will allow modeling pathologies and treatments with a computer and will improve the effectiveness of existing therapies.
