Researchers of the CoMMLab group (ETSE-UV) and the MSLab group (URJC of Madrid), in collaboration with the company Next Limit Technologies, have developed a technique for the simulation of highly viscous and viscoelastic fluids that allows simulations with great efficiency. This type of fluid is common in different industrial processes, but also inccloser contexts such as cooking, since materials like mayonnaise, cream or honey fall into this category.

The proposed technique is based on the simulation methodology called Position Based Dynamics (PBD), widely used in video games and special effects. The PBD technique performs the simulation in two phases: first it makes a rough approximation to the behavior of the fluid and then carries out an iterative process in which the position of the fluid particles is corrected. The novelty of the work consists in modifying the correction of the particles to consider the velocities in the process, together with a viscoelastic fluid model for its use with PBD.

The new technique allows simulations of non-Newtonian and highly viscous fluids with a very low computational cost compared to existing techniques, allowing interactive simulations of this type of fluids. The technique has been incorporated into the company's Real Flow VFX software, and can be used in the production of special effects, animation or video games.

The work will be presented next week at the SIGGRAPH Asia congress, the main forum in computer graphics and interactive techniques worldwide and published in ACM Trans. on Graphics. It will be presented by Héctor Barreiro, graduated in Multimedia Engineering at the ETSE-UV and currently a doctoral student at the URJC of Madrid.
