Presentation of the Reading and Writing Club

In a context characterised by some such as the "Information Society" or the "Communication Society", the importance of reading and writing's use cannot be restricted to the students' work tools, as academic or traditional literacy own skills, linked to reading and writing understood in their most conventional sense.

For this reason, the University of Valencia exercises in a responsible way its role in the recognition of reading and writing as an essential vehicle of complete promotion of the whole university community and as a basic and transverse competence to whatever field, through the Reading and Writing Club.

The Reading and Writing Club rises from the acceptance of an important need in the current society: reading and writing, understood not only as a mean to decode a determined graphic code, but as the essential instrument for the development of the human being in all the vital fields: from the acquisition of any field knowledge, the discovery of the universe or of the own identity, the socialisation, the belonging to a collective, a culture and its connection, the exploration of the cosmos and, especially, the essential vehicle towards the communication and active and critical participation within society.

This recognition means an active and explicit commitment with the university community and its surrounding environment through the design, coordination and promotion of a systematic and coherent action for the complete education and development of reading and writing competences and skills, with particular emphasis on the critical, autonomous and reflexive thinking, and in the New Information and Communication Technologies (NITC) influence.

For this reason, the Reading and Writing Club is understood as an interdisciplinary space of reflection, meeting and dialogue, as a place exchanging experiences and practicing reading and writing, as a research field around a vital and urgent need nowadays.

From an eclectic and conciliatory point of view, the Reading and Writing Club reinforces the commitment of the Univeristy of Valencia as cognitive and cultural intermediary and, preferably, its implication with society and their environment by means of activities, proposals and favourable surroundings for reading and writing within the university community, such as the fulfillment of talks, workshops, seminars or meetings with authors and outstanding specialists ranging from the areas of academic writing to reading extensive dynamics. The last aim lies on the essence, in the encouragement of the multiple literacy that is made up of politextual and policontextual practises without forgetting the pleasure and fascination for reading and writing, with special attention to new languages and modalities emerged from the New Information and Communication Technologies.
