In April 1939, the end of the Spanish Civil War did not bring peace, but the forced imposition of victory. Then, it started another sort of war with different fronts and guns. First, the dictatorship persecuted without mercy all of those suspicious of having supported the republicans. Afterwards, all forms of opposition were harshly repressed. The aim was to eradicate the roots of democracy, labour movement and freedom of thought; avoiding any opposition in order to impose a new society model based in fascist and national-catholic principles. As a consequence, violence was the spine cord of fascism during the 40 years it lasted.

This exhibition has the purpose of rescuing and disseminating this part of history. It expects the visitor to understand the characteristics of Francoist repression in Valencian society - in all its forms. This way, you shall get closer to massive overcrowding in detention centres, life in jail, executions, abuses, labour battalions and the control over the whole society and the persecution of anti-Francoism. All of this from a social and gender perspective, paying attention to the testimonies and experiences of thousand of Valencians who suffered more directly the dictatorship. We want to pay tribute to them.
