"Multilevel analyses of openness and radical vs.incremental innovation in developing countries".

El resum del treball és el següent:

"The effect of firm openness on innovation is shown to be positivelymoderated by economic openness in less developed countries (LDCs).However, when we distinguish the types of innovation, we show thatalthough firm openness positively predicts radical innovation, this effect is negatively moderated by economic openness. We argue that ourfindings on radical innovation are reflective of a “why create when you can adapt” phenomenon. This suggests that increased access to external knowledge in more economically open countries might reduce the need for more open firms to develop their own original innovations, causing these firms to rely on incremental innovation (adapted / slightly modified product), instead of risky radical innovation (original product) strategies. Our findings are based on multilevel analyses of almost 6000 firms in 17 LDCs in South Asia and Sub Saharan Africa. We account for several firm characteristics as well as the differing economic, geographical, legal and political contexts. This paper contributes to the literature on economic institutions and knowledge accessing theories of innovation by disaggregating and embedding the effects of less purposive forms of knowledge inflows on firm innovation performance".
