The doctoral programme in Advanced Hispanic Studies pretends to train professionals and researchers of every field related to the Spanish Language, Spanish and Spanish-American Literature, Portuguese Philology and the Theatre and Performing Arts in the Hispanic context so that within the different profiles (advanced academic knowledge, training for the research and specific applications in the working field) it can acquire a high-level Hispanic training and the appropriate techniques for the preparation of a doctoral thesis of excellence in some of these areas. The researchers' training is, in the European Knowledge Space, a key element of society. The social recognition of the acquired abilities in the third cycle is one of the main challenges for the reach of levels of quality, internationalisation, innovation, recognition and mobility in the Spanish university.

The doctoral programme is coherent with the lines of research of the Department of Spanish that include all the fields related to the Spanish Language (history and historiography, phonetics and phonology, grammar, semantics, lexicography and lexicology, pragmatic and spoken Spanish, varieties and uses of the Spanish language, and Spanish for specific purposes), Spanish and Spanish-American Literature, Portuguese Philology and the Theatre and Performing Arts in the Hispanic context (both in the historiographical field of all the periods of Literature and analysis of literary production, and in the cultural contexts, discourses and artistic trends of the Spanish literary and theatrical practice). The offer of research lines and its scientific quality is integrated and justified both by the research career and the R&D strategy of our Department.

The members of the Department of Spanish who are part of the doctoral programme possess a consolidated research and teaching career, both at national and international level, proof of this are the quality publications, as well as the research projects they manage, the defended theses and the number of six-year research period that they have. The scientific quality and the relevance within the research community of the members of the Department of Spanish turn it into one of the most outstanding departments as far as research of the University of Valencia is referred, as well as in one of the Departments of reference in the international field.

The degree of internationalisation of research of our Department has a positive effect our doctoral programme, which has accepted and accepts Spanish students (from our university and other national universities), and also from European, Spanish-American, American, Canadian, Asian, African and Arabic universities.
