DETECT reveals the role of land use and water management in regional climate change through remote sensing and modeling from groundwater to the upper atmosphere

Regional Climate Change:

CRC1502 joins forces at the University of Bonn and its project partners to tackle one of the most challenging problems in our understanding of climate change.
While several continental regions of the Earth are getting wetter, others are drying out not only in terms of precipitation, but also in terms of increased or decreased surface water, water stored in soils, the root zone of plants, and groundwater. The observations, however, do not support a simple logic of dry gets drier and wet gets wetter, and existing climate models do not sufficiently explain the observed patterns of hydrological change

Two PhD students will further develop a coupled multi-source, multi-scale data assimilation (DA) system at the continental scale, where surface soil moisture, total water storage change, and land surface temperature data will limit further analysis. coupled from groundwater to the earth's surface. They will assess the extent to which the reanalysis demonstrates its ability to represent the observed trends, reproduce interannual variability, and simulate extreme events. Special attention is paid to the investigation of strategies to correct anthropogenic impacts on the hydrological system (irrigation, groundwater extraction) through AD.
