The professor José Antonio Sobrino Rodríguez, researcher of the Department of Earth and Thermodynamic Physics, of the Universitat de València, has received the prestigious Jaume I Prize for the Protection of the Environment 2019.

The jury has highlighted his research in the study of planetary changes through Remote Sensing techniques and in the development of algorithms to measure the Earth land and sea surface temperature from artificial satellites.

José Antonio Sobrino is  professor at the Department of Earth Physics and Thermodynamics of the Faculty of Physics. He is currently president of the Spanish Association of Remote Sensing (AET) and leads the Global Change Unit of the Image Processing Laboratory (IPL), located in the Science Park of the Universitat de València. His research career focuses on the study of the changes undergone by the Earth, analyzed by Remote Sensing, as well as in the digital processing of the images provided by satellite sensors.

He has published more than 250 papers in national and international journals and presented more than 200 contributions in different symposia, and has supervised 16 doctoral theses and leaded 25 research projects, many of them granted by national organizations, the European Union and the European Space Agency.

He is founding President of the Recent Advances in Quantitative Remote Sensing congress series, and coordinator of the Land Product Validation / Land Surface Temperature and Emissivity (LPV / LSTE) of the Committee on Earth Observations Satellites (CEOS). In 2010 he received the Carta de Poblament award from the city of Torrent, in the category of Science, Technology and Environment.
