GEOGRAPHERS, PROFESSIONALS OF LANDSCAPES

Geography is a science of landscape whose main objective is to analyse, describe and assess the interaction of physical and human processes at different scales. Geographers are professionals increasingly involved in the management and planning of the territory, either individually, or as part of interdisciplinary teams. By studying Geography you can be a landscape expert.
Geographers can be useful in society because they study issues which affect the environment, the distribution of resources in the territory, the decisions that concern people and landscapes. They may also be required as local development agents and specialists in environmental issues and processes that affect rural and urban areas. Their training allows them to study environmental hazards and also to work as consultants in fields related to sustainable landscape practices.
Geography graduates are also specialists in demography, population and migration studies, and may be part of teams dedicated to the study of these processes, both in public institutions and non-governmental organisations or private entities.
Geographers are prepared to act as cultural and tourism agents, an aspect that is becoming more valued and appreciated by a society interested in maintaining and preserving natural resources, heritage, cultural landscapes and collective memory.
In addition to its professional opportunities, the degree in Geography also helps educate citizens. That’s why we incorporate contents related to international conflicts, inequalities and social problems of the developed and the developing world. It provides an overview of a changing world.
The theoretical training is complemented by the use of databases, statistics, cartography, Geographic Information and Remote Sensing Systems. So, they can be trained to work as technicians in digital cartography and GIS.
