ABSTRACT

Startups are among the current top priorities for economic and job growth in Europe and Spain. However, only about 5% of Spanish start- ups survive to five years, an average life of a Spanish startup being 2,2 years. Post-mortem testimonies of failed startups indicate conflicts and the effects of work stress to be among the top reasons for this failure. However, the antecedents of start-ups failure and entrepreneurial success are largely under-studied.

GOALS

The purpose of ALLOSTART is to study real startup top teams to uncover dynamics of conflicts and stress to identify the early indicators of startup survival and entrepreneurial success. The contribution of ALLOSTART will be empirically-driven guidelines for start-ups on how to prevent and effectively deal with conflicts, that particularly focus on group-level coping strategies. This will allow to take early preventive actions to avoid destructive spirals of conflicts and stress that, through increased social allostatic load over time, can impair quality of decision-making, relation quality, and wellbeing of the top team members, and, in the long term, lead to start-ups failure. Looking towards the positive side, ALLOSTART can contribute to a constructive use of conflicts, to promote WB and start-ups success.
