Eduardo Talens.

Eduardo Talens has received the 2017-2018 outstanding PhD thesis award for his thesis “Contrato de Trabajo y Concurso de Acreedores”, directed by Ángel Blasco, Professor of Labour Law and Social Security of the University of Valencia and Supreme Court Judge.

Eduardo graduated in Business Administration and Management and in Law in 2011 at the University of Valencia, where he also studied the Official Master’s Degree in Law, Business and Justice (2012). In 2013 he began his training as a researcher in the doctorate program and obtained the title of Doctor of Law in 2016. During this period he enjoyed the Talent Attraction scholarship of the University of Valencia and currently works as Tenure-track 1 professor in the Department of Law of Labour and Social Security.

What difficulties have you encountered while undertaking the thesis?

The typical ones of any investigation in the legal area. With the problem that my thesis had to combine two different areas of law (Labour Law and Commercial Law).

What continuity does your research have?

Legal discipline is always open to changes in legislation and new judicial interpretations. In the case of the “Labour-Bankruptcy” there is still a long way to go and investigate, because new problems that must be solved continuously arise.

What do you think your research contributes to the scientific community as a whole and to society?

To the whole scientific community it provides a complete and practical text on a complex subject on which there are very few works.

Personally, it gave me a panoramic view of labour relations in a context of economic crisis and the satisfaction of the awards obtained and other merits related to research.

What applicability can your work have?

The work I developed in the thesis, translated into two books, is a support for legal operators who face real problems with workers, day by day, in the case of companies declared bankrupt.

Does getting a Doctorate facilitate employability?

In the first place, getting a PhD is a rewarding experience on a personal level and, of course, it opens up work horizons that without such a degree would be unattainable.

Would you recommend starting doctoral studies? What advice would you give to a person who wants to get a PhD?

Yes, I would recommend the experience, but you have to have patience and a certain capacity of sacrifice. My advice is that with work and effort almost everything can be achieved.

Have you actively participated in outreach activities and scientific communication? How important do you think these activities are?

Of course. I have actively participated in more than thirty scientific meetings in their several variants (organisation, communications, presentations...). They are very interesting to learn, to disseminate the results of an investigation and to share and exchange ideas and opinions on many topics.
