The Faculty of Law hosts the conference “Language and Law: the challenges of legal terminology”

On Tuesday 24th May, this symposium, in which several experts will share their knowledge on legal terminology and the use of language in the legal of law, will be held. The event will take place in the Conference Room of the Faculty of Law of the Universitat de València.

The opening of the meeting, at 9.30 a.m., will be given by Ferran Suay, director of the Languages Service of the Universitat de València; Verónica Cantó, president of the Valencian Academy of Language (AVL); Rubén Trenzano, general director of the Language Policy and Multilingualism Management; Javier Palao, dean of the Faculty of Law at the Universitat de València; and Vicenta Tasa, professor of Constitutional Law at the Universitat de València, co-director of the Chair for Linguistic Rights and member of the Valencian Academy of Language.

At 10 a.m., the president of the Valencian Academy of Language, Verónica Cantó, together with Teresa Cabré, president of the Institute of Catalan Studies, will address the importance of regulatory institutions in the framework of legal terminology.

Vicenta Tasa, co-director of the Chair for Rights, will then give a talk entitled “La necesidad de un uso normal y general de la lengua en el ámbito jurídico. Retos y carencias” ("The need for a normal and general use of language in the legal sphere. Challenges and shortcomings”).

At 12 p.m., Francisco Javier Palao, professor of History of Law at the Universitat de València and dean of the Faculty of Law, will give a lecture entitled “La formación de los juristas” (“The training of jurists”).
Afterwards, Josep Cruanyes (lawyer and member of the Catalan Society of Legal Studies) and Antoni Llabrés (professor of Criminal Law at the University of the Balearic Islands) will debate on “Terminología jurídica, la construcción del corpus necesario” ("Legal terminology, the construction of the necessary corpus”). This round table will be moderated by Rosa Agost, professor of Translation and Interpreting at the Universitat Jaume I and member of the Terminology and Linguistic Advice Section of the AVL.

In the afternoon session, a panel of experts will discuss the reality of language in the world of Law. The session will be moderated by Brauli Montoya, professor of Catalan Philology at the University of Alacant and president of the AVL's Section for the Promotion of the Use of Valencian. Participants will include Ángel Ilario, magistrate at the Administrative Court of València; Margalida Victòria Crespí, judge at the 24th Court of First Instance of Palma de Mallorca; Jesús Muñoz, dean of the Illustrious Bar Association of Sueca; and Rogeli Montoliu, dean of the Illustrious Bar Association of Vic, and president of the Language Commission of the Council of Illustrious Bar Associations of Catalonia.

The conference will be closed by Carles Padilla, vice-principal for Internationalisation and Multilingualism at the Universitat de València; Rafael Castelló, professor of Sociology at the Universitat de València and co-director of the Chair for Linguistic Rights; and Artur Ahuir, president of the Terminology and Linguistic Advice Section of the AVL.

This conference has been organised by the Chair for Linguistic Rights of the Universitat de València, the Department of Education, Culture and Sport, and the Valencian Academy of Language, in collaboration with the Faculty of Law. Attendance will be certified for those registered and who can prove their presence.
