José Manuel Rodrigo, former Dean of Medicine and Vice-Principal, passes away

Professor José Manuel Rodrigo Gómez, who was Vice-Dean and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, Head of the Hepatology Service at the Hospital Clínico and Vice-Principal of the Universitat de València, passed away this Friday, October 30th.

Professor José Manuel Rodrigo Gómez was trained as a doctor at the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry of the Universitat de València, being awarded with the exceptional award for his degree.

Between 1967 and 1968, he was a fellow and physician assistant at the Faculty of Medicine in Paris, when the French capital was in full swing. Previously he had worked as a doctor in different Spanish hospitals.

Dr. Rodrigo was a man committed to transformation and social progress. He joined the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Valencia on his return, becoming a university professor and lecturer and, subsequently, Emeritus Professor.

A specialist in hepatology, he was a distinguished researcher who conducted twelve doctoral theses and obtained 24 scientific research projects.

The results of his technical-applied research were reflected in more than 250 scientific publications.

With a deep vocation for university management and policies, he was Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry of the Universitat de València in the teams of Dr. Carmen Leal and Dr. Antón Llombart to later became, throughout two consecutive terms between 1993 and 1999, Dean of the Faculty in which he had been trained, which is one of the foundational and reference centres of the Universitat de València.

Dr. José Manuel Rodrigo was, afterwards, Vice-Principal for Institutional Relations at the Universitat de València in the first governing team of Principal Francisco Tomás Vert.

The Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry have described him as ‘a great teacher, clinician, researcher, consultant and, above all, a good person and a great university graduate who has created a school in the Faculty. At this time, numerous researchers are following his main line of research into hepatology’.

The faculty’s Dean, Dr. Francisco J. Chorro, noted that the memory of Dr. Rodrigo will always be present in his Faculty.

On hearing the news of his demise, the Principal of the Universitat de València, Mª Vicenta Mestre, has conveyed her condolences to the Dean and the entire university community of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. She also highlighted the fact that Dr. Rodrigo was a very dear person in his Faculty and in the Hospital due to his outstanding academic and professional profiles, as well as for his contribution to the university government.

In the same vein, the previous Principals of the institution, Dr. Francisco Tomás Vert and Dr. Esteban Morcillo Sánchez, have joined the institutional condolences.
