Biographical outline:

He was born in Salamanca (22 April, 1922-Oviedo, 26 January, 1998), he take primary, secondary and university studies in different parts of the peninsular and European geography, until that in 1951 he became affiliated with the University of Oviedo.

His teaching activity started in different national institutes (Avilés, Cabra, Logroño), he made some stays as tenure-track 1 lecturer at European Universities (Berna, Basilea), and he culminated continuously for forty-five years at the University of Oviedo, with the exception of the stays as visiting professor at United States (Madison, Austin).

His research activity has led him to explore different fields in the area of Philology, from the rigorous study of grammar to the functioning of language in its synchronic, historical and circumveinal dimensions of language (Researches on the “Libro de Aleixandre”, 1948; Filología Española (Spanish Phonology), 1950; Gramática Estructural (Structural Grammar), 1951; Estudios de Gramática Funcional del Español (Studies of Functional Grammar of Spanish language), 1970; El Español, Lengua milenio (The Spanish Language, Millenium language), 1982; Estudis de Lingüística Catalana (Studies on Catalan Linguistics), 1988; Gramática de la Lengua Española (Grammar of the Spanish language, 1994), to his concern on the literary language (La Poesía de Blas de Otero (The Poetry of Blas de Otero), 1955; Ángel González, Poeta (Ángel González, Poet) 1969; Estudios y Ensayos Literarios (Studies and Literary Essays), 1976; Anatomía de “La Lucha por la vida”, (Anatomy of “The fight for Life”, 1973).

The recognition of his work by the society and the scientific world materialised when he became Full Member of the Real Academia Española (Spanish Royal Academy), corresponding member of the Acadèmia de Bones Lletres de Barcelona (Royal Academy of Belles Lettres of Barcelona), Full member of the Real Instituto de Estudios Asturianos (Royal Institute of Asturian Studies) and of the Hispanic Society of America.
