Joseph Gulsoy

Biographical outline:

Joseph Gulsoy was born in Ordu (Turkey) in 1925. Armenian linguist.

Gusloy emigrated to North America as a young man, and was academically trained at the universities of Vancouver, Toronto and Chicago. Professor in 1958, nationalized in Canada in 1959, and professor, in 1970, of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese of the University of Toronto.

He has studied and edited the Valencian-Castilian Dictionary of Manuel Joaquim Sanelo (1965), has published articles on Catalan and Spanish linguistics, among which La lexicografia valenciana (1959-62), L'evolució de la terminació adjectival-IDUS en català ( 1981) and Estudis de gramàtica històrica (1993). We must also highlight his collaboration in the Diccionari etimològic i complementari de la llengua catalana and in Onomasticon Cataloniae by Joan Coromines.

In 1989 he was awarded the Ramon Llull Prize of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans and the Catalònia Prize. Member of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans since 1994, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Barcelona in 1998, and in 1999 by the Universitat de València.
