Biographical outline:

Manuel Elkin Patarroyo was born in Ataco in 1946. Colombian scientist.

He graduated in 1970 from the National University of Colombia and in 1971 he obtained his doctorate in Medicine and Surgery.
His professional career was oriented to research in various national and foreign centers, especially in American and Swedish centers. He founded the Immunology Institute of the San Juan de Dios Hospital at the National University.
In 1983 his team began work on malaria, obtaining in 1984, a synthetic vaccine that showed good results. Patarroyo donated the vaccine, on behalf of Colombia, to the World Health Organization (WHO) in May 1993. The vaccine was endorsed by that agency in 1995.

    Academic of the Royal Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences of Madrid
    Knight of the Order of San Carlos and Simón Bolívar, of Colombia.
