Manuel Cardona was born in Barcelona, 1934. He studied Physics in the University of Barcelona between 1950 and 1955, and received the Nacional Prize to the best record in the Faculties of Physics os Spain. In 1958 he obtained the doctorate in Sciences by the University of Madrid with his work on the quadratic photomagnetoelectric effect in germanium and silicon and the following year he got the Ph.D. in Applied Sciences in Harvard. He has been professor and researchers in North American renowned universities until his nomination as director of the well-known Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart, where he retired in 2003.
