The 3rd Conference of Critical Thinking analysis the influence of the ideological context in Science

The 3rd Conference of Critical Thinking and Scientific Dissemination starts on Monday 5 of March at the Faculty of Philosophy and Education Sciences of the Universitat de València. It is entitled “Science and Ideology”. It will address ecology, feminism, relativism and postmodernism, among other issues, inside their ideological and social context.

The Conference will address how they have disseminated pseudoscientific ideas through time; the relationship among ideology, science and democracy; or the amount of existing products lacking scientific rigour which are stockpiled at the chemists. Along with them, the innovation-entrepreneurship myth, the use of technology to indefinitely improve human beings’ life and how the premises of this vision accomplish the ideological function will be analysed.

The meeting is organised by the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit and the Faculty of Philosophy and Education Sciences of the Universitat de València. It counts with the interventions of Stephan Lewandowsky (professor in Cognitive Psychology at Bristol University) and Jesús Zamora (Science Philosopher at the UNED). José Manuel López (professor in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology) and Carolina Moreno (professor in Journalism at the Universitat de Valencia) participate as well.

As a previous activity to the conference, there will be a conference entitled La epidemia de opioides led by José Morón Concepción. It will address the necessity to change the culture of opioid prescription. The activity will take place in the Conference Room at the Faculty of Philosophy and Education Sciences on Monday 5 of March at 5 p.m. The Federación Valenciana de Asociaciones de Divulgación Científica will offer a presentation of scientific dissemination projects. It will take place at 6.15 p.m.

Juan Soto, journalist and essayist in El Confidencial, El País and El Mundo; David Barberá, professor at the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia and member of INGENIO; and Taner Edis, professor of Theoretical Physics at Truman State University will take part in the conference Stephan Lewandowsky on Tuesday 6. In addition, at 10:30 a.m. there will be a panel of discussion entitled ¿Han robado el ecologismo? that will count with the participation of Andreu Escrivà, Ramón Serrano and Emilia Lopera. Chosen communications among those received at the conference will be read between 7.30 p.m. and 8.45 p.m.

The interventions on Wednesday 7 are given by Antonio Diéguez (8.45 a.m.), professor of Logic and Philosophy of Science at the University of Malaga; Jesús Zamora; José M. López Nicolás and Carolina Moreno. On Wednesdays, the call of papers will take place between 11 and 13 hours. The panel of discussion ¿Han robado el feminismo? will start at 5.15 p.m. It will count with the participation of Capitolina Díaz, María Blanco y Carmen Gadea.

Maarten Boudry will be in charge of the ending session (7.30 p.m.). He is a referent in the study of pseudoscience and a professor in Philosophy at the University of Ghent. He will present his book Science Unlimited?: Science The Challenges of Scientism, edited by Massimo Pigliucci.

21st century pseudoscience was studied in the first edition of the conference. 2nd edition analysed the progress in Neuroscience.
