The Martínez Guerricabeitia Collection exhibition has arrived at the Cultural Centre La Nau after travelling to different areas in Valencia.
The "Art, Pain and Commitment. Women in the Martínez Guerricabeitia Collection" exhibition is expected to open on Thursday, 28 May at 19:30. It will be on display in the room of the same name at La Nau until 20 September.
The exhibition intends to "focus on the chores of the women artist that are included in the Martínez Guerricabeitia Collection at the University of Valencia. Plenty of these women developed their work in a sociopolitical context which made it very difficult for them to have autonomy as creators. And, nonetheless, they managed to subvert the power parameters subjugating them. Other women from recent decades have enjoyed greater prestige in their own time, but nowadays most women artists still continue to reclaim their place in an androcentric artistic system", as explained by the curators Rafael Gil and Mariángeles Pérez.
Some of the artists displayed are Carmen Grau, Isabel Oliver or Carmen Calvo, winner of the 1st Bienal Martínez Guerricabeitia 1990, among others.
Furthermore, according to some curators, "an example on the consideration and the surroundings very much hostiles in which they expressed their creativity specially during the Franco regime is the female representation that appears in many of the works made by other authors in the collection", such as Artur Heras, Rogelio López Cuenca y Josep Renau. "Some images -held- that they showcased the stereotypes present in patriarchal contemporary art, which was the sustenance on which women artist traced their trajectories despite adversities they managed to express their commitment and struggle through art."
The exhibition is organised by the University of Valenica, the Office of Vice-Rector of Culture, Sports and Social Relations, the Martínez Guerricabeitia Collection and the General Foundation of the UV.
