Observatorio Astronómico Aras de los Olmos
2nd Summer University Aras de los Olmos Open registration

Astronomy and development

Aras de los Olmos and the surrounding towns were declared Starlight Reserve by UNESCO in 2017. It is one of the best 14 places on Earth to observe the cosmos. Since then, Aras de los Olmos has become an important spot for astronomical research where natural and scientific heritage is valued in the interest of developing Valencian mountain range.

It is for good reason that the Observatorio Astronómico de la Universitat de València, which is the oldest university observatory in Spain (founded in 1909 and declared of public interest in 1919), is located in the Muela de Santa Catalina. It is a privileged area of our mountain range (1300 metres above sea level) that is barely affected by light pollution. Currently it is a level 1 scientific centre that carries out astronomical research, teaching and dissemination activities.

In this context, the 2nd edition of the Summer University of Aras de los Olmos (UVAO) is entitled Astronomy and development.

This year’s edition of the Summer University of Aras de los Olmos will focus on studying the relationship between astronomy and development, as well as the boundaries between scientific progress and the possibilities that the Universe can provide to human beings. Speaking of astronomy means addressing a field of study that, because of its enormous importance for sustainable development in rural areas, exceeds academic demarcations.
