Omics and health: an increasingly important relationship

In recent months, the word PCR has become very prevalent in our vocabulary. The media, men and women dedicated to science, health, art, agriculture, commerce, industry, teaching, mechanics, fishing, as well as other groups of population, they name it. Even Kary Banks Mullis himself would be impressed. Mullis received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1993 for inventing the PCR. Few people know PCR stands for “polymerase chain reaction”. In addition to its applications for virus diagnosis, the PCR has been crucial for the development of omics. We will discuss the generalities of this technique, its evolution, its role in genetic research and in the development of genomics. We will see the main advances in genomic epidemiology in obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and the interaction with diet. We will also learn what epigenomics is and how every day researchers make new and exciting discoveries in this and other omics that are being essential to advance in the prevention and treatment of health problems.
