The amazing creations of science fiction are a great starting point for a playful introduction to the fascinating world of science. In the words of Stephen Hawking “Science fiction is not only good fun but it also serves a serious purpose, that of expanding the human imagination". The science fiction that is written today is often a scientific reality tomorrow”. In this talk and traveling through space and time we will check how scientific theories, their laws and their principles, can often be introduced suggestively through science fiction.

This conference can be organised in two ways:

  • Starting from space travel (law of universal gravitation, escape velocity, space junk, current advances, mistakes in cinema and literature...).

  • Through time travel (we must talk a little about special relativity, the speed of light, time dilation, length contraction, paradoxes).

Any previous work with students on these topics can be useful. Teachers can choose which of the two topics they prefer.

Brief CV

Julia Suso holds a doctorate in Mathematics from the University of Valencia, has been Head of Instrumentation at the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Valencia and, currently, is professor in the Department of Financial and Actuarial Economics at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Valencia.

She has participated in several space projects, with collaborations in the design and development of the ESA INTEGRAL gamma ray missions and LEGRI on board the Minisat 01 satellite.

She is currently working on the study of the nature and physical parameters of Be stars and transient X-ray binaries. She is also working with the space missions CoRoT (CNES/ESA) and KEPLER (NASA), dedicated to astroseismology and search for extrasolar planets. She has made astronomical observations in the main astronomical observatories around the world (Chile - La Silla, Canary Islands Observatory of Teide and Roque de los Muchachos, South Africa - SAAO, Almeria - Calar Alto, Canada - DDO).
