The viruses and the diseases that can produce have deeply marked the history of humanity and its evolution on the planet. As a result, since the discovery of the viruses in 1880 we have worked intensely to understand and eradicate these infectious agents. Much of the effort within the scientific community focuses on the so -called emerging viruses, that is, those viruses that in the future could be a serious threat to our health systems. In the first part of this talk we will review the main viral threats that we face today to understand their potential risk and know the tools we have in the fight against their possible expansion. Then, with the aim of presenting and demystifying the main weapon we have against viral infections, we will describe the foundations of vaccination, including a brief description of the different types of vaccines and their composition.
