Territorio, mujer y medio ambiente en el medio rural. Acciones y propuestas creativas frente a la despoblación (‘Territory, women and environment in rural areas. Creative actions and proposals against depopulation’) is the title of the seminar organised by the Recartografías (‘Recartographies’) research group at the Faculty of Geography and History of the University of Valencia from Thursday 13. A dozen people will participate in the activity, both experts from the academic world in the environment, geography and political sciences, as well as people who have developed life projects in rural areas.

Luis del Romero, Professor of Geography of the academic institution and coordinator of the initiative, explains that the objective of the seminar is to discuss creative proposals against the depopulation of the rural environment based on the role of women, as well as the rural territory as a space that generates opportunities.

Among the planned events there are a couple of round tables (“Estudiar en la ciudad y volver al pueblo. Experiencias y ejemplos de personas que volvieron (o se fueron) al pueblo”) (‘Studying in the city and returning to the town. Experiences and examples of people who returned (or left) to the town’), on Thursday 13, with Carlos Tarazón, Councilor for Tourism of the Tuéjar Town Hall; Trini Martínez, technician at the Arq & Volta company, of archaeological services; and Dani Riera, mayor of San Agustín.

Representatives of the Conecta Natura projects, focused on biodiversity conservation; the Viver Oil Cooperative; the interpretive hiking company Itinerantur and the soft drink company La Malferida will participate in the table “Proyectos de vida y empresariales en el medio rural en el ámbito del medio ambiente, la agroecología o la alimentación” (‘Life and business projects in rural areas in the field of environment, agroecology or food’), which will be on Friday.

The seminar will be hosted by Professor Neus la Roca, and on Thursday Luis del Romero will also speak, with a presentation on creative proposals for the rural environment, and Sonia Gil, environmental management consultant, who will talk about the Ruractiva project, according to which women and the rural environment are an indispensable binomial. Friday afternoon will be the presentation of creative proposals on the environment (by Professor Carme Melo), others on housing (by Antonio Varela) and depopulation territories (Cate Corell).

On Saturday 15, participants in the seminar will travel to San Agustín (Teruel), municipality bordering the Valencian region of Alto Palancia, and will know the experience of rehabilitation of Mas Blanco, an uninhabited nucleus in the second half of the twentieth century. The depopulation path of the municipality will also be visited, and a talk about Teruel Existe will be held, in which Tomás Guitarte, member of the Spanish Congress of that movement, will participate.

The Recartographies association started in 2014 with a seminar dedicated to the depopulation of rural areas, Descartography of the rural world. Six years later, depopulation is one of Spain’s main social concerns.
