Loeske Kruuk, professor at the University of Edinburgh, will give a lecture on those fundamental elements in the evolutionary change of wild animals, within the framework of the XII Peregrí Casanova Memorial of Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology. The lecture, “The fundamental ingredients of evolutionary change in wild populations”, will be on Wednesday, March 1 at 1:00 p.m. in the Charles Darwin room on the Burjassot-Paterna campus of the University of Valencia.

Kruuk will explain whether it is possible to observe and predict evolution in populations of wild animals through changes in their phenotypes. To do this, she will be based on the theoretical models of evolutionary biology and, therefore, she will also address the problems that may arise when applying them.

With the XII Peregrí Casanova Memorial, homage is paid to the man who was a full professor at the University of Valencia and taught for more than 40 years at the institution. He had a great influence on the spread of evolutionism in Valencia and in 1909 he participated in a prominent way in the tribute paid to Darwin by medical students on the anniversary of his death.

The lecture has been jointly organised by the Faculty of Biological Sciences, the Cavanilles University Institute of Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology, and the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit (UCC+I) of the University of Valencia. The Ministry of Science and Innovation and FECYT Innovation (Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology) also collaborate.
