If you are here, at the website of the Degree in Mathematical Science at the Universitat de València, it is because you are considering the possibility of studying mathematics. Let us, first of all, thank you to choose us between the full range of possibilities. To choose among the university degrees is one of the most important choices you have to make in your life and it deserves close scrutiny.

These are principally vocational studies, so we take for granted that you are one of the few who like mathematics, at least what you have studied so far. We understand that you like to solve problems, that you are among those who are satisfied when solving a maths problem.

What will you find here? Well, mathematics is the science of abstraction and deduction. From some examples it is extracted what is common. Therefore a conjecture is eventually raised and the truth is deduced by chained reasoning.

This pattern is applied in the different subject of the degree. The results are presented as a sequence of deductions from some hypothesis until arriving to a thesis. The emphasis is primarily on those deductions, demonstrations. This is probably the most noticeable difference with mathematics studied at secondary education. More that applying formulas, methods or techniques, we are interested in the whys and wherefores of all that.

We are a sort of special scientists. While chemists, biologists and physicists work from actual experiments, especially the first two, and then they discover the laws of nature through deductions, mathematicians work with examples (they are our experiments) and get results and methods that will be used by other scientists in the future.

Some say that the word “mathematician” means, according to etymology, “willing to learn”, i.e., “learning”. It is an appropriate statement due to the word “mathematics” (from Greek μαθηματικά) comes from μάθημα (máthēma), which means learning, study, science. The adjective is μαθηματικός (mathēmatikós), which means related to learning, scholar. Thus, mathematicians are students. That was in the days of the Pythagorean schools of classical Greece, and so is nowadays in our universities.

If you like mathematics and are “ready to learn”, not only with us during the degree, but all along your life, you are welcome to the Degree of Mathematics at the UV.

The world transformation in recent decades, from an industrial society to one where knowledge and information are its centre, has meant that professionals need to bring themselves up-to-date constantly, they are always willing to learn new techniques, new methods. According to the etymology of the word, we mathematicians are prepared for that.

In this respect we can say that we also have much to do with computer technicians. For example, a calculation algorism is only a kind of computer programme. Now, we repeat, we are interested mainly in the reason why of the algorism and not in the technique to carry it out.

With us, you will study:

  • Algebra, is probably the most abstract branch, which studies the properties that verify operations as a whole and the structures they have.
  • Mathematical Analysis, with successions, limits, the properties of functions, derivatives and integrals.
  • Statistics and Operative Research,  from the probability theory to the graph theory.
  • Geometry and Topology, curves, surfaces and proximity relations in a set.
  • Applied Mathematics, from solving equations to implementing algorithms.

Finally, we have to tell you that these are not easy studies. There is a lot of work to do in order to complete the degree, but if you succeed in doing it, you will become a member of a collective with a lower rate of unemployment, just like a recent study (May 2025) by the Statistical Spanish Office points out.

We hope this information will help you to make a decision. If not, do not hesitate to contact us because we will be happy to talk to you.
