- Resumen de la trayectoria científica. El objetivo principal de mi investigación es el estudio de la plasticidad estructural neuronal en el sistema nervioso central adulto, que incluye remodelación sináptica y de neuritas y neurogénesis adulta. Estamos particularmente interesados en cómo esta plasticidad estructural está involucrada en la etiología de diferentes trastornos psiquiátricos y su tratamiento. Nuestros focos principales son los circuitos inhibidores corticales y la forma polisializada de la molécula de adhesión celular neural (PSA-NCAM) como modulador de su plasticidad. Nuestro grupo descubrió que la expresión de PSA-NCAM en la corteza prefrontal medial está regulada por serotonina (a través de receptores 5HT3) y dopamina (a través de receptores D2), dos monoaminas profundamente implicadas en la etiología y el tratamiento de la esquizofrenia y la depresión y cambios en la expresión de moléculas relacionadas con la neurotransmisión inhibidora También describimos la distribución de las células que expresan PSA-NCAM en la amígdala, la corteza prefrontal medial y otras regiones corticales durante la vida adulta y el envejecimiento y encontramos que la mayoría de estas células eran interneuronas maduras polisializadas exclusivamente por la polisialiltransferasa St8SiaIV. Recientemente descubrimos que la expresión de PSA-NCAM es un regulador crítico de la estructura y conectividad de las interneuronas corticales, especialmente en la inhibición perisomática de las células piramidales.
