During this lifetime, the Genevan critic and essayist Jean Starobinski (1920-2019) was honoured as ‘the last of the humanists’. Famous above all for his writings on the Enlightenment and his innovative readings of authors such as Montaigne, Rousseau, Diderot, Baudelaire y Stendhal, he also left a wealth of writings on the history of the body and medicine. Specialists were familiar with some of them, in particular his 1960 doctoral thesis on the history of the treatment of melancholia, which has reached a wider audience since the publication of the compilation La tinta de la melancolía. Next Wednesday 11th November 2020 at 6 p.m., the López Piñero Inter-University Institute is celebrating the centenary of his birth, by organising a colloquium, which will gather two prestigious scholars of his work, to discuss his place in the historiography of the body and the mind:

Vincent Barras (Institut des Humanités en Médecine, Université de Lausanne)

Fernando Vidal (Institució Catalana de Recerca i Estudis Avançats / Universitat Rovira i Virgili)
