The SILKNOW project has celebrated the Weaving Europe conference on Wednesday 21 December at La Nau of the Universitat de València (UV). The event has celebrated the award in the category of Research and the Grand Prix for Innovation received from Europa Nostra and the European Commission, with the unveiling of the commemorative plaque, as well as bringing together the members of the initiative and awarding diplomas to the theses that have emerged during its development for their outstanding contributions in their respective fields of study.
The action, set in the framework of the Horizon 2020 programme, produced digital tools beyond current technologies to improve our understanding and conservation of Europe's silk heritage from 2018 to 2021.
An interdisciplinary team of researchers from the ARTEC group of the Institute on Robotics and Information and Communication Technologies (IRTIC) and the Department of History of Art of the Faculty of Geography and History applied research on next-generation information and communication technologies (ICT) to meet the needs of users in various fields, such as museums, education, tourism, and cultural and creative industries. The project was coordinated by PhD Marcos Fernández, director of the ARTEC group; PhD Cristina Portalés, Ramón y Cajal researcher; and PhD Ester Alba, vice-rector of Culture and Society.
The event has been opened with the presentation of the European projects Heritage Quest by PhD Eva Kaptijn, HOMEE by PhD Zachary Jones, Swapmuseum by Elisa Monsellato, Fluxguide by PhD Kasra Seirafi, Odeuropa by Inger Leemans and in relation to young designers with Xavier Giner.
This has been followed by the European Heritage Award ceremony with the intervention of the vice-rector of research of the UV, Carlos Hermenegildo, the representative of Europa Nostra through Hispania Nostra, Bárbara Cordero, and the professors doctor Marcos Fernández, Jorge Sebastián and Cristina Portalés, UV researchers involved in SILKNOW.
Likewise, five theses carried out during the development of the project have been awarded in recognition of their extraordinary contribution to their fields of study and excellence in research practice.
In the afternoon, the representative of the European Commission, Marina Martínez, has listed the opportunities offered by the Horizon Europe programme. Finally, the participants have enjoyed a guided tour of the facilities of La Nau.
Universitat de València, GARIN 1820 S.A. and the Instituto Cervantes, from Spain; Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique - Lyon 2 and EURECOM, from France; Universita Degli Studi di Palermo, from Italy; Institut Jozef Stefan, from Slovenia; Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Universitaet Hannover, from Germany and Monkeyfab, from Poland, have participated in the initiative.
