The initiative «LOD-RoadTran18 - Supporting the cross-border use of Road Traffic Data with Linked Open Data based on DATEX II» ends today. After 37 months of work, the team formed by partners from Spain and the Czech Republic has been dedicated to making open data related to road traffic in Spain and the Czech Republic available for dissemination using a standards-based semantic model, which avoids interoperability and ambiguity problems.

LOD-RoadTran18 is an action co-funded by HaDEA and coordinated by the University of Valencia with the technical assistance of LMT Group. It aims to support the reuse of dynamic road traffic data in the Czech Republic and Spain by making the published data findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable (FAIR) both through the national open data portals and the European data portal and, in turn, allowing its connection with any other data from the same sector, or with a different nature, using Linked Open Data (LOD).

At the start of the project, several open traffic data portals existed, but these were not LOD or did not reach an international level. The new LOD-RoadTran18 system supports the re-use of traffic data through the European data portal, making this information accessible through different sectoral platforms at international level.

Federated traffic information queries, based on semantic capabilities, enable access to a collection of cooperative database systems that could, for example, take into account weather forecast data or full meteorological information on conditions at the instant of an accident or obtain complementary information on the location, such as details of the place or surroundings like points of interest, hospitals, gas stations, car workshops, etc.

Dr. J. Javier Samper, member of IRTIC, a research institute of the Universitat de València, has coordinated the consortium with the technical assistance of LMT Group. The Directorate General of Traffic, desideDatum Data Company S.L., ESAM Tecnología S.L., Polytechnic University of Valencia, TamTam Research and the Czech Technical University of Prague have participated in its implementation. Earlier this week, they held a final meeting to discuss issues related to the conclusion of the project.
