The objective of LOD-RoadTran18 is to improve the interoperability, distribution and re-usability of traffic data from Spain and the Czech Republic at European level in order to make them Linked Open Data-LOD. The system, which incorporates semantic capacities, will allow the so-called federated queries, as well as other services and applications. The project is co-funded by the European Commission within the framework of the CEF Telecom programme.

There are currently several open traffic data portals, but these are not LOD or do not reach international level. The new LOD-RoadTran18 system will support the reuse of traffic data through the European Data Portal, allowing this information to be accessible through different sectoral platforms at international level.

Once the project is funded, the open data related to traffic in Spain and the Czech Republic can be distributed using a semantic model that avoids problems of interoperability and vagueness.  Federated queries on traffic information, based on semantic capabilities, enable access to a collection of cooperative database systems that may take into account weather forecast data or complete weather information of the conditions existing at the time of an accident, to name a few examples.

This project is co-funded by the European Commission through the Connecting Europe Facility Telecom (CEF-Telecom) mechanism, whose objective is to facilitate transnational interactions between public administrations, companies and citizens, developing Digital Infrastructure Services (DSIs) and broadband network environments. Projects such as LOD-RodTran18 contribute to the creation of an interoperable and interconnected ecosystem of digital services that sustain the digital sole market.

LOD-RoadTran 18 is framed within the European Commission's strategy to encourage the re-use of information, facilitating its use and guaranteeing its availability.

The project participants are the Directorate-General for Traffic, the Research Institute on Robotic and Information and Communications Technologies (IRTIC) of the Universitat de València, Desidedatum Data Company S.L., RBSolutions, Esam Tecnología S.L., the Universitat Politècnica de València, and Leading Management Technology S.L. The Czech Republic is represented by the company TamTam Research and the Czech Technical University.
