Dr. Francisco Alonso, Director of INTRAS, attended the Workshop on Network Wide Road Safety Assessment Methodology, organised by the Directorate General for Mobility and Transport of the European Commission and held on 16 January 2023.

The aim has been to present the model they developed and that will be an useful tool for the improving of the road safety.

Directive 2008/96/EC on road infrastructure safety management, as amended by Directive (EU) 2019/1936, provides that, by the end of 2024, the Member States should do the first Network Wide Road Safety Assessment, that will reveal what are the most dangerous road sections, to be addressed with targeted inspections and remedial measures. The model developed considers both the specific features of the road, that can predict the risk of accident, as well as the accidents’ statistics.

The assessment exercise returns a safety rating of each road section, on at least 3 categories (this model works with 5 categories). It is to be redone at every 5 years, to see the evolution and to refocus on the most dangerous road sections.
