The aim of the award is to encourage the creation and dissemination of works that, using accessible language, bring scientific and technological advances — as well as interesting aspects of various branches of knowledge — closer to the general public, with a particular focus on pre-university students. The winning book will be co-published in Catalan by Edicions Bromera and the University of Valencia, as part of the “Sense Fronteres” collection.
Eligible for the award are popular science essays written in Catalan or any variety of the language, as well as in Spanish, English or French, with a length of between 250,000 and 300,000 characters (including spaces). Any additional materials included in the text must be original and copyright-free or accompanied by the appropriate reproduction permissions. Individuals who have previously won this award are not eligible to participate. Additionally, works derived from bachelor’s theses, master’s theses, doctoral theses or scientific articles are excluded.
Entries should preferably be submitted via the UV’s electronicoffice (http://webges.uv.es/uvEntreuWeb). They may also be submitted in paper format to the General Registry of the UV (Avinguda Blasco Ibáñez 13, 46010 Valencia). The works must be original and unpublished, and will be assessed anonymously by the jury based on the following criteria: scientific interest and coherence (up to 3 points), creativity and originality (3 points), clarity of presentation and text structure (3 points), and correct use of syntax and spelling rules (1 point).
This year’s jury comprises Rosa M. Donat, vice-rector for Innovation and Knowledge Transfer, who will act as chair; Carolina Moreno, professor of Journalism at the UV and director of the “Sense Fronteres” collection; Francesc Lloret, winner of the 29th edition of the award; Mónica Bolufer, researcher in the Department of Modern and Contemporary History (UV); and Juli Peretó, researcher in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (UV).
The prize will be awarded on the same evening as the other Ciutat d’Alzira awards, during a literary dinner on Friday 7 November. In addition to the cash prize, winners will receive the symbolic Ciutat d’Alzira Literary Awards trophy.
Publication of the call for entries in the Official Gazette of the Valencian Community (DOCV).
