The Cultural Center La Nau of the Universitat de València, during the ceremony held in the Museum of Art and History of Brussels, has officially received the European Heritage Label. This distinction, awarded by the European Commission, recognizes the symbolic value and historical role of the founding headquarters of the UV and in the creation of modern Europe. With this award, La Nau becomes the first site in the Valencian Community and the fifth in Spain to receive this recognition, following the Archive of the Crown of Aragon, the Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid, the Almadén Mining Park, and the Monastery of Yuste.
Receiving this certification places the institution in a position of international distinction. Out of the 67 well-known places in Europe, from the beginning of the registration, only five are affiliated with universities or institutions of higher education, with La Nau ranking fifth on this list and being the only Spanish university to receive this distinction. It shares this honor with prestigious institutions such as the General Library of the University of Coimbra in Portugal, the Tartu University Historic Complex in Estonia, the Seminaarinmäki Campus in Finland, and the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Hungary.
The official delegation from the Universitat de València, consisted of Albert Moncusí, vice rector of Culture, Sports and Social Cohesion; Marisa Vázquez de Ágredos, director of Cultural Heritage of the UV and Ester Alba, and as the representation of the Valencian Regional Government : regional minister Carmen Ortí and regional secretary Marta Alonso. María Agúndez, the deputy director general; Sergio Ortega, the head of European programs and Margarita Cruz, management technician were representing the Ministry as joint presence to highlight the institutional collaboration of the various institutions in the candidacy presented to Europe.
During the event, Marisa Vázquez de Ágredos spoke on behalf of the institution’s head, Rector Juan Luis Gandía, to celebrate an award that highlights the cultural and humanistic role of the Universitat de València and ushers in a new era of European collaboration. The candidacy of La Nau, which has been under review since March 2025, stood out from the very beginning for its ability to connect the university community with the European dimension through its history, the figure of Joan Lluís Vives, and a wide range of cultural programming and projects dedicated to upholding European values.
This international milestone comes on top of the certification of Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe Programme which the Universitat de València (UV) has already earned through the Route of Historic Pharmacies and Medicinal Gardens (chaired by the UV)—a dual distinction (European Commission/Council of Europe) held by only two institutions in all of Spain, thereby establishing the Universitat de València as a unique leader in heritage management and democratic values throughout Europe.
