Alice Guionnet and Thomas Bayes, epidemic analysis, probability in the US elections, probability and music, are important figures and themes in the field of Probability. The Faculty of Mathematical Sciences of the University of Valencia (UV) has organised the VaDeProb#1 conferences, in which students will give brief lectures on Probability issues that are important not only in the probabilistic field, but also in society and in other scientific disciplines. The lectures, individually or in small groups, will be accessible to the university community through the Blackboard platform from Monday to Thursday of this week.

The professors of Probability of the UV Degree in Mathematics, Carmen Armero and Carmen Iniguez, have designed some Probability conferences where students will briefly present important contributions of this field to society and other scientific disciplines. The name with which the conference has been baptised, VaDeProb#1, is a simile of the well-known expression of Valencian handball “va de bo”, in order to connect the world of probability with the Valencian roots.

“We can say that there are two types of Mathematics: the exact ones and those of uncertainty. Probability is the Mathematics of this second group, a less well-known branch, but very important because it is dedicated to building models to quantify the uncertainty, present in our society and in many of our daily situations”, highlights Carmen Armero, professor of the Department of Statistics and Operations Research.

These sessions are included in an activity carried out by the student body in the third-year Probability subject of the Degree in Mathematics, which consists of choosing a probabilistic avatar and preparing a work on a topic in the field of probability. During the sessions, which will take place from Monday to Thursday of this week, the students will briefly present – in lectures of between 5 and 10 minutes – the chosen topic.

The professors of the subject highlight their gratitude to the dean of the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences, Joan Monterde, and the entire dean team, as well as the secretary of the faculty, Lucía Sanus, and the Department of Statistics and Operations Research, for their work in the organisation and patronage of the activity. The protagonism of the conference will be for the student body, who will receive an accrediting diploma for their participation in the activity.
