On the 21th of February, the Sociology and Social Anthropology Department organised a commemorative act for the 50 years of Sociology teaching in the Universitat de València in the Conference Hall of the Social Science Faculty. In this event, Manuel Pérez Yruela, professor of Sociology from the Instituto de Estudios Sociales Avanzados (IESA) (Institute of Advanced Social Studies) of the CSIC, imparted the conference ‘La sociología hace treinta años. La sociología dentro de treinta años’ (‘Sociology 30 years ago. Sociology in 30 years’.)

In October of 2018, sociology teaching celebrated 50 years of presence in the Universitat de València classrooms. The first classes of this discipline were imparted in the new Economics Science degree as well as in the Faculty of Economics and in the Faculty of Philosophy and Education Sciences. José Jiménez Blanco, Damià Mollà, Josep Vicent Marqués, Josep Picó and Salvador Salcedo were among the first professors of Economics and then María Manuela Poveda Rosa joined them. In the case of the Philosophy degree, the subject of sociology was imparted by Josep Vicent Marqués since 1969. At the end of the 1970’s Gonzalo Anaya, Olga Quiñones and Ernest Garcia began to impart courses of Sociology of Education in the teacher training school. In the business school were also some subjects about sociology.

During the 1980’s, some professors from the labour relations and social work school joined the initial group. In 1986 the Sociology and Anthropology Department was funded with the just mentioned professors along with the professor of Social Anthropology from the Faculty of Philosophy Josepa Cucó Giner.

In 1998 the degree in Sociology first began, which along with the studies of social work and Labour Relations constituted the educational core of both the first and second stage of the Faculty of Social Sciences studies, which was created a year after. Since that moment, Sociology has been extended to more than 20 degrees, with virtually one hundred of professors.
