Cinema series about HIV

A new film series focused on AIDS and HIV closes the programme of the Cinema Club of the Universitat de València of this year. It will take place in the Palau de Cerveró and, as is usual in the programme of the Cinema Club, all projections will be in original version with subtitles, with presentation, colloquium and free entry.

With this series ends this programme of 2016 of the Cinema Club, dedicated to life after contracting HIV. In this series, we will know people who suffer this kind of illnesses and how hard it is to combat them, not only for the illness itself, but also for the social stigma that is still associated with the people who suffer from HIV.

The programme starts on Thursday 24 November with the film “Dallas Buyers Club” (Jean-Marc Vallée, 2013), an interesting story based in life of Ron Woodroof, a Texan rodeo cowboy and womaniser who was diagnosed of AIDS in 1986 and that shows the fight against this terrible illness and the difficulties to find an effective treatment. On Thursday 1 December, it will be projected “Savage Nights” (Les nuits fauves, Cyril Collard, 1992), in which Cyril Collard, filmmaker and protagonist of this story, wanted to show part of his personal life. In this film, he tells the story of a bisexual musician, who catches HIV and as revenge he has sex with two different people at the same time. The series is closed on Thursday 15 December with “Kids” (Larry Clark, 1995). Set in New York neighbourhoods, it boldly shows the social reality of the United States in the 90s, but it can be extended to other places.

Meanwhile, in the Rector Peset Hall of Residence continues the cinema series “The capitalist discourse in cinema”. On Tuesday 13 December it will be projected “Concursante” (Rodrigo Cortés, 2007), that tells the story of the fortunate winner of a famous TV show whose luck changes unexpectedly. Finally, on Tuesday 20 December it will be available to see “Capital” (Le capital, Costa-Gavras, 2012), the story of a banc clerk who receives a promotion and he becomes one of the most powerful and influential people who does not care of the consequences of his acts.
