Gender equality

The Universitat de València and Mujeres Progresistas have organised a conference titled ‘Justice is blind. Is it also blind when it comes to gender? Women as constitutional subjects: the right to justice under equal conditions’. Organised in the Faculty of Law by Julia Sevilla, Aida Vizcaíno and Alba Soriano, sessions will be opened on Wednesday 26 October by Gabriela Bravo, provincial counsellor for Justice, Public Administration, Democratic Reforms and Public Freedoms.

According to the organisers, ‘it is a cliché, among people related to Law, to say that justice is blind, but, is it a reality that when brought to justice everyone is equal or is it a must-be?’. And they also add: ‘Among all the issues that this approach includes, we have chosen the situation in which women are constitutional subjects; how the fact of being women has an influence on their right to have a life without violence, and, on the other hand, we will talk about women’s rights when they go to prison.’

Among the participants will be Inmaculada Montalbán, president of the Equality Committee and the Observatory against gender violence in the General Council of the Judiciary from 2008 to 2013; Susana Gisbert, prosecutor since 1992, who practises in the Violence against women Section; or Mercedes Gallizo, who was the general director of the Penitentiary Institutions from 2004 to 2011.

The conference will be held in the Joaquín Tomas Villarroya Hall.
