Animation cinema of Studio Ghibli and the insomnia, main subjects of the film series of the UV Cinema Club

The films, with free access, will be projected in subtitled original version at 18:00h and preceded by a little presentation. They will be discussed in the next colloquium.

Films series ‘Ghibli: el reino de los sueños’ (‘Ghibli: the world of dreams’) at the Principal Peset Hall of Residence.

The childhood is territory of nostalgia. When Miyazaki together with Isao Takahata and Toshio Suzuki founded Studio Ghibli in the mid-80s, there was building up a factory of dreams that continues until now. In this series, the Cinema Club suggests doing a tour for some of the key films of the Japan animation study par excellence. All the films of this series will be shown every Tuesday, at 18:00h at the Principal Principal Peset Hall of Residence.

The series will be open next Tuesday 4 April with the screening of ‘Spirited Away’ (Hayao Miyazaki, 2001), an adventures tale starred by a girl that looks for the cure of a curse that have been suffered her parents. It is also a necessary anticonsumer and ecologist metaphor. Next session will be on Tuesday 11 April, with the film ‘The Tale of the Princess Kaguya’ (Isao Takahata, 2013), the last film of the master Takahata that adapts a Japan medieval legend about a girl born from a bamboo plant. On Tuesday 25 April the series continues with ‘From Up on Poppy Hill’ (Goro Miyazaki, 2011), where the fantasy is replaced by a realist story that combines friendship and the situation of Japan after the II World War. Finally, on Tuesday 2 May the programming concludes with ‘The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness’ (Mami Sunada, 2013), a documentary about the creative process of the Studio Ghibli and the filmmakers.

Film series ‘Vivir sin dormir’ (‘Living without sleeping’) at the Palau de Cerveró

Although we have not pay so much attention to that, sleeping is one the most necessary activities for humans, as much as eating and breathing.

The programming of the series will begin on Monday 3 April with ‘Insomnia’ (Christopher Nolan, 2002), a police thriller starred by Al Pacino, who performs a detective in charge of resolving a chase and also has to fight against the lack of sleep. Next session, on Thursday 6 April, will be ‘Bringing Out the Dead’ (Martin Scorsese 1999), one of the less known films of Scorsese in which Nicolas Cage give birth to a driver of ambulances tormented by the images of all people that he cannot save. On Monday 10 April. ‘The Machinist’ (Brad Anderson, 2004), will be projected. This is a Spanish film in which is complicated to separate the reality from the hallucination. The series will end up on Thursday 27 April with ‘Cashback’ (Sean Ellis, 2006), film inspired in a short film with the same. Thanks to this short, Sean Ellis was nominated to the Oscars, and is about the story of a supermarket employee that suffers insomnia as a consequence of the abandonment of his girlfriend.

Cinema AlbaTexas

The Language Policy Service starts the collaboration with Cinema AlbaTexas, which will display Catalan films, in other words, films in Catalan original version, in subtitled original version in Catalan and in dubbed version in Catalan, and open to every projection or session from Monday to Sunday. The programming should be checked on the webpage of the cinema to know the films that meet these requirements.

Every person of the university community (students, PDI and members of the Association of Alumni) can collect the passes of the campaign in the self-access centres of languages by showing the University card.

Every pass could be exchanged by a free entry for any Catalan projection of any session at the ticket office of the cinemas, the same day of the session you want to attend. Obviously, the exchange for a specific session will be subjected to the availability of entries.
