The Area of Research in Economics of Culture and Tourism (Econcult) launches a call through the project DESIGNSCAPES to fund innovative solutions to confront the challenges that cities face. Econcult is a research group of the Inter-university Institute for Local Development (IIDL), directed by professor Pau Rausell.

The project comprehends a total of 1.5 million euro which may be used to fund viability projects, prototype development and scability tests. Public agents, public organisations, companies and even individuals may apply for it.

The overall objective of project DESIGNSCAPE, according to Rausell, is “to explore and exploit the generative potential of urban areas by highlighting the systematic challenges that they entail. Not only that, but also through supporting those innovation processes that, with the help of a design perspective, provide collective values and increase the ability of innovative solutions to successfully confront crucial problems”. Right now, Rausell continues, Valencia is “one of the few European cities that shows the most determination in social and urban innovation initiatives, which consequently makes it a goal territory in this type of projects, which aims to distribute 1.5 million euro through different phases”.

In order to inform of the characteristics of this open call and to facilitate the participation of active agents in our territory, Econcult has scheduled an informative session and an innovatory discussion. It will take place today, Tuesday 2nd October, at 19:00 in the Chapel of the Carmen Covent.

The function will consist of an informal presentation and, in order to illustrate, of some experiences similar to the one the project creators have in mind. The speakers of the session will be Ramón Marrades, who will explain the design’s logic in the Marina project; AiRT Project representative Blanca de Miguel, who will explore the adversities of done designing in the creative industry; Mª Luisa Peydro, who will talk about the situation of the creativity and innovation ecosystem; Javier Ibáñez, who will speak at length about the promotion of urban innovation, and Xavi Calvo, who will tackle design related topics.

The second part of the meeting will consist of a presentation of the characteristics and phases of the open call, which will provide some recommendations and some advice to be the most successful at the application.
