Artificial intelligence and sustainability: the focus of La Falla Immaterial of the Universitat de València 2020

The UV’s dissemination project ‘La Falla Immaterial of the Universitat de València’ celebrates its fourth edition by using engineering and data science to bring the festive and scientific culture closer through new technologies. This year, the initiative helps to raise awareness of the impact of the little individual decisions on the global sustainability thanks to a ‘bot’ with artificial intelligence that tests our commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

The project was presented last Monday 10 in a press conference in the Cultural Centre La Nau, in which apart from a live demonstration of how thesoftwaredeveloped for La Falla Immaterial of this year works and the fire of the first virtualmascletà, members of the Colla de Dolçaines i Percussió of the Universitat de València performed some pieces in the Senate of the building. Isabel Vázquez, Vice-Principal for Studies and Language Policy of the Universitat de València; Pere Fuset, councillor of Festive Culture at Valencia City Council; Francisco Grimaldo, assistant director of the School of Engineering of the Universitat de València, and Emilia López, Professor at the Faculty of Teacher Training of the Universitat de València, took part of the presentation.

The newwidgetof the Falla Inmaterial 2020 is called Xe-xe and is a conversationalbotthat allows to generate more than 1 billion different conversations. Xe-xe can measure, with only four questions, the allignment of the person with whom it talks regarding the 2030 agenda about subjects such as equality, responsible consumption and actions for climate, health and all that surrounds us. In its mission, it is supported by other five characters: Pepeta, Rafel, Vicent “el traca”, Ampariues and Nelo. Theseninotsrepresent us on a virtual square working as a social thermometer and visualising the profiles of the participating public.

To participate, you only have to visit the web pagefallaimmaterial.comon your mobile phone or computer and chat with the conversationalbotXe-xe. Those people who prove to be more sustainable could aim for the Sustainability Award of La Falla Inmaterial 2020, which grants 200 euros and will be raffled on 19 March. You can enjoy a multimediamascletàand, from the night of 18 March on, acremàon the web page of the project. The EMT (municipal transports company) of Valencia will spread the project through the buses and there will be an animation team on the street during themascletàsto carry out dynamism actions, hand gifts and invite people to take part of La Falla Immaterial of the Universitat de València 2020.

The proposal of Falla Inmaterial of this year uses artificial intelligence, data analysis and visualisation algorithms. The necessary knowledge to carry out the project is provided by computing, multimedia and data science studies from the School of Engineering (ETSE-UV), located in the Burjassot-Paterna Campus of the Universitat de València. The development of project of La Falla Immaterial is leaded by a team formed by: Francisco Grimaldo (management); Emilia López y Emilio Soria (data management and analysis); Daniel García, Gabriel Chaparro y Elena Álvarez (programming); Alejandro Casasús (design).

La Falla Inmaterial has the institutional support of the Chair Baleària in Artificial Intelligence and Neuroscience, the Cultural Centre La Nau, the Language Policy Service, the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit of the Universitat de València, the Junta Central Fallera, the Valencia City Council and the EMT of Valencia, as well as the sponsorship of entities such as Destilerías Tenis and CAPS Group.
