Awarding ceremony of the Prizes of the Olympiads of Biology and Geology

The awarding ceremony of the prizes of the 16th Olympiad Biology and the 10th Olympiad of Geology will take place today at 5:30 p.m. at the Charles Darwin Room of the Aulari Interfacultatiu of the Universitat de València at Burjassot. The Universitat de València will award to the winners a financial aid for their studies that is worth €1,000.

This aid will be given only if the winner is a student of the first course of a UV degree.

The Faculty of Biological Sciences and the Delegation for the Incorporation to the University have organised the 16th Olympiad of Biology and the 10th Olympiad of Geology. It aims to encourage students to study these disciplines and promote the student’s academic effort.

245 sixth form students of Biology joined the 17th edition of the Olympiad of Biology in Valencia.

The exam was set on 15th February to be sat in any of the three provinces of the Valencian Community: Universitat d’Alacant, Universitat Jaume I and Universitat de València. More than 450 joined the Olympiad in the region.

The winners of the Biology Olympiad are the following:

Marcos Chova García, IES Maria Enríquez (Gandía); María Pérez Millet, Colegio San Vicente Ferrer – PP. Dominicos (Valencia); Michel Muñoz Álvarez, CEU San Pablo (Moncada); Rubén Badal Górriz, IES Camp de Morvedre (Sagunto); Sara Pérez Martí, IES María Enriquez (Gandía); Marlon Ortiz Arias, IES Camp de Morvedre (Sagunto); Julia Miñana Olivares, IES Maria Enríquez (Gandía); Daniel Sergio Marín Pérez, Colegio Nuestra Señora del Pilar (Valencia); María Yáñez Hernández, IES San Antonio de Benageber (San Antonio de Benageber) and Juan Fernández Revuelta, Colegio San Antonio Abad – Salesianos (Valencia)

In addition, Marcos Chova García, María Pérez Millet and Michel Muñoz Álvarez participated as representatives of the Valencian Community in the XIV Spanish Olympics of Biology, in Palma de Mallorca from 28th to 31th of March. Michel Muñoz Álvarez obtained the silver medal in this phase and will therefore participate in the Latin American Olympics of Biology in Cochabamba (Bolivia) in September.

Moreover, the 10th Edition of the Geology Olympics was held in the Faculty of Biology. A total of 159 Sixth Form students of private and public centres of the province of Valencia participated.

The exam took place last 25th January in the Charles Darwin hall of the Interfacultative Rooms in Burjassot and the Seminar room of Biology. The practical test was taken in the laboratories of the faculty of Biological Sciences.

These are the winners of the Geology Olympics:

Ramón Margarit Tornero, Camp de Morvedre High School (Port de Sagunt); Óscar Hernández García, Camp de Morvedre High School (Port de Sagunt); María Sáez Díaz, Benicalap High School (València) and Azahara Rodríguez Sánchez, Carles Salvador High School (Aldaia).
In addition, students Adrián Ordóñez Sanmartín, Neus Gómera Romera, Pablo Díaz Martínez and Anna Muñoz Murgui will receive a special mention for their excellent results.

The first four winners of our local phase participated as representatives of the Valencian Community in the 10th Spanish Geology Olympics, which took place in Universidad Laboral de Cáceres High School (Caceres), from the 5th to the 7th April. The Student Ramón Margarit Tornero obtained the gold medal in this phase, which means that he will participate in the International Olympics of Earth Sciences in Daegu (Republic of Korea) from the 26th August to the 3rd of September.

The event will be hosted by vice-rector of Ocupation and Formative Programmes, Adela Valero. Other important people of the Universitat will also be there, such as Carmen Baño, Dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences; Benjamí Pérez, representative of the Official College of Biologists in the Valencian Community; Miguel V. Pardo, coordinator of the Geology Olympics; and M. José Lorente, coordinator of the Biology Olympics and delegate for the Incorporation at the Universitat.
