Registration is open for a comic contest on Physiology to encourage scientific dissemination in students

Carlos Romá, Professor of Physiology at the University of Valencia, Silvia M Arribas (Autonomous University of Madrid) and Beatriz Gal Iglesias (European University of Madrid) have created FisioCómic 2021, the first Spanish comic contest of Physiology, a contest that will put tests the artistic and scientific communication skills of undergraduate students in Health Sciences from any university in the state.

In the competition –in which the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit of the University of Valencia (UCC+i UV) collaborates–, undergraduate students of Health Sciences of any level and from any Spanish university, forming teams between 2 and 5 people. To participate, a comic of between 3 and 9 vignettes about a physiological process must be designed, which will be presented accompanied by a summary through the professor of the Physiology area of the university of each team.

Physiology is a core subject in the Health Sciences degrees at Spanish universities. In the specific case of the University of Valencia, it has its own department, attached to the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, and which is located on both the campus of Blasco Ibáñez and Burjassot-Paterna, in the latter case, in the building of the Faculty of Pharmacy.

The registration period for the contest is from May 15 to June 1, 2021 and the deadline for receiving comics, between June 15 and 30, 2021. The 10 best comics will be selected by a jury made up of physiologists from all participating universities. These 10 finalist works will be evaluated by a jury made up of professionals in comics, design and scientific communication.

There will be cash prizes for the top three comics, as well as graphic medicine comics for the top 10 finalists. In addition, all submitted comics will be published in a book. In addition to the UCC+i UV, the Spanish Society of Physiological Sciences (SECF), the Spanish Society of Medical Education (SEDEM), the UAM Scientific Culture Unit, the Chair are collaborating in the activity. of Studies of the Comic of the University of Valencia-Foundation SM and the Editorials Norma, Astiberri and SaludArte.
