The International Biogeography Society (IBS) has organised a week of activities (September 14-19) around the figure of the German naturalist, geographer and explorer Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859). The Cavanilles Institute of Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology of the University of Valencia has joined the celebration with five lectures of specialists in the field, on Monday between 11 and 13 hours, through the Blackboard platform.

Biogeography is the part of geography that studies how living things on the planet are distributed and developed. The event organised by the IBS is inspired by the global impact achieved by the commemorations of Darwin’s Day. The society urges, on the occasion of the celebration of the 250th anniversary of Humboldt’s birth, to recover his legacy and highlight various current biogeographic research projects.

Tropical and Mediterranean temporary pond metacommunities is the title that groups the five interventions of Xavier Armengol, Francesc Mesquita-Joanes, Ángel Gálvez, Maria Bisquert and Andreu Castillo-Escrivà, researchers of the Cavanilles Institute of Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology of the University of Valencia. They belong to the Cavanilles Aquatic Systems Ecology and Biogeography team.

The planned lectures are: “Tropical and Mediterranean ponds: the environment” (X. Armengol); “Diversity in tropical and Mediterranean ponds” (F. Mesquita-Joanes); “Environmental and spatial effects on species distribution” (A. Gálvez); “Colonization of the ponds: experimental hatching of resting eggs” (M. Bisquert); and “Simulated and natural metacommunities: effects of time extent” (A. Castillo-Escrivà).
